When Should Dogs and Cats Undergo Sterilization?
The appropriate age for sterilizing dogs and cats varies based on several factors such as breed, gender, health, and lifestyle. Generally, they can be sterilized from 6 months of age onward.
Advantages of Sterilization:
- Decreased disease risk: Sterilization lowers the risk of mammary tumors, ovarian tumors, prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and sexually transmitted diseases.
- Minimized unwanted behaviors: Sterilization aids in reducing undesired behaviors like barking, biting, chewing, inappropriate urination, and running away from home.
- Population control: Sterilization controls the population of stray animals.
Disadvantages of Sterilization:
- Anesthesia risks: Sterilization involves surgical procedures that carry risks associated with anesthesia.
- Weight gain: Sterilized animals are prone to weight gain.
- Behavioral changes: Sterilized animals may show increased aggression or anxiety.
